Remember happiness is a way of travel, not a destination.
— Roy Goodman

So I write this today as a small reminder for myself. I want to be able to look back at this specific post and read these suggestions and tell myself this matters. Happiness is not a goal- it's a well-being. It's how you live your life that matters. You have a choice on whether or not you will be happy today. You have a choice on whether or not you will be angry, sad or disappointed. Sometimes things in life can be overwhelming and stray you into an emotional direction but always know that you have the choice to get out of it. You can decide your fate for today. Let's explore how you might do this if you are having trouble.

1. Know that everything is not under your control.

Keep in mind that stressing and worrying about things not in your control will only make you sad and angry. Realizing that you cannot physically control everything really does help. It's almost a peace of mind to know that you shouldn't worry about something that was always out of your control. Fate will take the reigns and God has plans of his own (if you believe in that sort of thing).

2. Understand that sometimes people can have bad days.

You don't have to let their bad day have an effect on you. Ever experience road rage? Understand that they aren't mad at you. They are mad at something else that is affecting their day negatively. They are not making the conscious decision to be happy today like you are. Forget about them. Forgiveness is key to making your mood a little brighter.

3. Surround yourself with people that care about you. Forget about those that don't.

Recently I have been privy to a moment or two such as this. Friendships change and people change. Usually it's no one person's fault but if this happens to you, don't be sad. Move on. Keep telling yourself that there are people around that do care about you and you need to make sure you hang around them. Toxic friendships are no good. It's not about getting constant praise or even love, but it's about just knowing that you have friends around that care and even if they won't always be there- they are right now. Take advantage of that.

4. Do what you love to do.

This one is kinda obvious but I have to say it anyways. Wonderful things happen when you are doing what you love. Hopefully your job gives you that satisfaction but if not then make sure to do something that you love each and every day. It will brighten your mood considerably and you won't even know it!  Even something as simple as watching your favorite movie can be attractive on a hard day. Do what makes you smile.

5. Allow yourself moments of weakness.

Sometimes we need to let our guard down that we can let the happiness in. Let people love you the way you deserve to be loved. Go have some fun in a place you have never been before. Talk to someone who is new if you are shy. You may be surprised at what is around that corner. New friends and new experiences are waiting for you to discover their happiness.

6. Find what doesn't serve you well in life and let it go.

Don't hold on to things that don't serve your well being in a positive way. This goes for emotional things as well as physical things. Decluttering your brain and your life is a good way to start with this. I have tips on how to declutter in another post. This can be the hardest dang thing to do but I think I am beginning to see that this is one of the most important things you can do for yourself.

Being happy is like a disease. A good one. Hopefully you can catch it for life. I want to.
