My Everyday: Continued | Placerville Lifestyle Photographer

Enjoy yourself. These are the good old days you are going to miss in years to come. ~Unknown

So unbelievably I am still trying really hard to complete my 365 project. Ya know- where I take a photo every day for a year? Well, let's just say that I am a few days behind but I am not sweating it. The coolest thing about it is that I am not sweating it actually. According to my previous post about starting the 365 project, I am right on schedule! I am trying my best and I am not giving up. I think I am about ten days behind. But actually I am not behind. I am right on track. I am doing what I love when I can find the time. I am trying to find moments in my daily life I would not have had otherwise shared had it not been for pictures. It doesn't matter to me if you understand the photo nor does it matter to me if you care about the subject. What matters to me is that it is a memory in my life that can never be taken away and it cannot be replaced. Some may leave me with happy feelings and others with sad feelings, all of which are ok. These feelings are my little secret. Only those that know me well may know some of these feelings without asking. I know this to be true- I am enjoying every minute of this life I am leading. Whether or not I show it daily, I am loving my life. My crazy busy schedule shows that I am trying to live it to its full potential and I want to remember these "good old days" for years to come. I want to hand these memories to my kids and say that we did that once. We went there once and we loved it. Can you say that to your kids? Are your memories fleeting glimpses of your actual memory? Don't let that happen to you!

Family Photos On The Farm | Placerville Family Photographer

Back again with a awesome session on a family farm. This family was so much fun to be around and I have to say that I am thankful to call them my friends now! Its been so great getting to know them over the last few months and I hope there are many more to come! I love it when families request the pets to be in the pictures because you never know what you are going to get. I think we did pretty good considering one dog was a little rowdy puppy! A Sweet Couple and Their Dog | Family Photographer Folsom

So this marks one of those times I have just loved every single detail about a session. The dog behaved. The lighting was perfect! I couldn't ask for  a nicer couple to talk with and it was the most fun I have had in a long time. J and D were the best to work for. They wanted engagement photos and they were very specific on their needs. I love that because it makes it so much easier on me. A Sweet Couple and Their Dog | Family Photographer Folsom

Working with dogs can be a challenge but honestly its not that bad! They can be fun and quirky and jumpy and lovey all at the same time. My background in animals definitely gives me an advantage here!

Sometimes I am not sure how I get some expressions but this one really hit the nail on the head so to speak. One of my absolute favorites of all time.

And lastly there is nothing like a good sunset to help with the mood. I love it! Don't you?

Happy New Year! | Children Photographer El Dorado Hills

"Rivers know there is no hurry. We shall get there SOMEDAY." Winnie the Pooh So it's a new year and it's a time of quiet reflection and decision making. Time for all those new year resolutions to take place if you have them. Time for thinking about the future and not dwelling on the past. As I sit here and think about all the things that I have to be thankful for over the past year I am just overwhelmed. All the things I have learned over the year and all things I was able to be present for just because my new job has allowed me to be that way. It is all priceless. So in remembrance of the last year I just want to say thank you to all my new friends and clients. You are all so important to me. More than you know. I am so thankful to have met and worked with each and every one of you that I can't say it enough. I can't wait to see what the new year brings and I am so excited to get going its unreal. My goals for 2015 are much bigger than those from last year but, I want to also remember the wise words of Winnie the Pooh. I will get there someday. Thank you again for all those people that have helped me in this past year and guided me through my first year as a full time photographer. I can't wait to start again!

2015-01-01_0003

If you are wishing to have a portrait session of your own this coming year don't hesitate to contact me as soon as you can. You won't be sorry you did!

Much love,

Heather

Sunny Family of Four | El Dorado Hills Family Photographer

You know them. Those really pretty days where the weather is sunny and nice and the temperature is just perfect? We always long for those days right? I know I do! I just love this time of year. Autumn is my favorite season. A little rain doesn't hurt anyone. In fact, in my part of the world we are in a serious drought so we need it badly here. But those sunny days....man oh man. I love them. It's where we can make magic like this one. This family of four, like most, was a little stiff to start out but in the end they were as relaxed as can be. I loved it. Every minute of it. As always. Sunny Family of Four | El Dorado Hills Family Photographer

Favorite Photographs | Placerville Family Photographer

“ Which of my photographs is my favorite? The one I’m going to take tomorrow. – Imogen Cunningham Haha! This is something that truly hits home for me. I have this problem, see? I take all these great photos of my kids in hopes of printing them in large format and then when I finally get around to wanting to spend all the money- I think- those are old photos. So...I take some more. By then I have spent the money and have to save up again. Therefore I have absolutely no photos of my kids on my walls. It's a vicious cycle. How about you? Do you have photos of your children on your walls? Celebrate life and love by putting photos on your walls. Framed? Canvas? Basic print? It doesn't matter as long as it's there. There is a bonus in it for you if you have included yourself in those photos.

As you can see, I don't follow my own advice. I hope you do though. Get on it! (And, if you would like me to do it for you---please don't hesitate to let me know...)

Fall Sibling/Senior Photography Session | El Dorado Hills Senior-Family Photographer

This fall season around here is so pretty. Why wouldn't any senior want their photos done this time of year? Seniors are so fun only because they have so much to talk about and so much excitement for what is to come in their lives. Usually they love sharing all their knowledge. This senior was no different. I really enjoyed getting to know her and her brother on this beautiful evening. Fall Sibling/Senior Photography Session | El Dorado Hills Senior-Family Photographer

Family of 4 Portrait Session | El Dorado Hills Family-Children Photographer

Another family session bites the dust. What I mean is---finally done! It's busy season here at Floyd Family Photography and I couldn't be more excited! I love getting to know each client as they come in and I love making the kids laugh. It's truly an honor to be able to capture these wonderful memories. Family of 4 Portrait Session | El Dorado Hills Family-Children Photographer

Family of 4 Portrait Session | El Dorado Hills Family-Children PhotographerSome of the most awesome moments for me are capturing my client's kids being super silly. They enjoy getting to loosen up and have fun. Even though I know parents usually won't buy these images, they still get a good laugh every now and then.

Family of 4 Portrait Session | El Dorado Hills Family-Children PhotographerThese are the moments that parents really look forward to. Getting that wonderful smile that isn't "fake" looking and that can get printed in large format to hang on their walls at home for a long time to come.

Today I am going to share a secret with you. It appears like all of these people from my sessions are prior friends right? To be honest, they are! I feel like I get to know each client well enough to the point that I can consider them friends. I learn about what they like to do as a family and we usually have things in common. Because talking comes so natural to me (hehe) I tend to talk people's heads off and they do the same. Here is another session where I am proud to say these people are my friends!

Many Funny Faces of Little Miss C! | El Dorado Hills-Folsom Children Photographer

Who doesn't love a montage of funny faces? Especially when it comes from a little girl! Little Miss C was the cutest thing and she just wouldn't stop. I had to capture this moment. Family of 5 Portrait Session | Placerville Family-Children Photographer

Last time we talked I introduced this beautiful young girl to you and now I have the privilege of introducing the entire family. Larger families are always a challenge but odd numbers are great because things always seem to look better. I recently did this little newborns session just last month and I can't believe how much she has filled out since then!! It's amazing to see my client's children grow up in front of my eyes. I love this family and every day we get to know each other a little better which is great for me. I relish in making new friends. Do you? Family of 5 Portrait Session | Placerville Family-Children Photographer

Sometimes it's ok to make funny faces and relax a little. Do you agree? It has to be a great stress reliever during a session. I love making people laugh because it brings out natural emotions!

Family of 5 Portrait Session | Placerville Family-Children Photographer

But in reality all people want from their session is what we call the "money shot" which means the portrait they will buy for their home to hang on their walls. These are a few of their options. How do you choose?

Beautiful Young Lady Portrait Session | Placerville Family-Child Photographer

This beautiful young lady was so fun to do a portrait session with. It's interesting when you do a family portrait session with friends. Sometimes they are already laid back enough because they are comfortable with you and in this case that was definitely true! I love this family and we have grown closer in the last few months even through we have known each other for years. Here is a sneak peek of their session. Hope you enjoy and can't wait to share more! Creativity and Me | Placerville Family-Child Photographer

"Creativity requires the courage to let go of certainties" --Erich Fromm So as many of you already know I am a member of Clickin Moms and I have to say that over the last year I have learned so much and I can't even tell you how many friends I have made. I am so thankful and grateful that I can call this my job. But sometimes it's really hard. Sometimes you get that feeling that you have messed up and it screws with your confidence. And when I say that, I mean that this happens to me daily. I look at my work and I see EVERYTHING that can be improved upon in a photo. I NEVER look at a photo and think that it is perfect. I also don't think of myself as a very creative person. I do feel that I am talented but I don't really like to toot my own horn so that being said I do think I have a ton to learn in this business and in the world of photography. It literally is a never-ending journey of learning. Clickin Moms is a great place to learn all this and I love that I have the opportunity to be a part of it.

Placerville Lifestyle Photography | Folsom Children Photographer

This month, Clickin Moms is holding their first annual conference for learning. Unfortunately I was unable to attend this year, but luckily they were giving away opportunities to listen to some online classes that they were streaming live online. The best part was that it was all for free! So this morning I sat down at the computer and I decided to watch my first talk. A wonderful artist named Megan was going to talk about creativity. Now, I want to be honest with you. I actually was kinda disappointed when I learned that this was the only program I was going to be able to watch today and it wasn't anything that I really had any interest in. I figured it would be very boring. Twice during the program I actually considered turning it off! I couldn't bare to however and I have to say that I am so glad I kept watching. By the end I had learned some very important things and I want to share them with you.

Placerville Lifestyle Photographer | El Dorado Hills Children Photography

1. Being creative is being prepared to fail.

Wow, that is so true. For anyone that knows what it is like to fail, it is so heart wrenching. It cuts you to the core sometimes. Now granted, it all depends on how much you have laid out on the line. To me, creative people are those that think of something and make it happen. Inventors, writers, artists, children, the list goes on. Now of course I can lump photographers in this group as well. The important thing to note here is that what ever you are trying to accomplish- if someone doesn't like it and you don't succeed, then you will feel like a failure. When I take a picture, I don't always strive for people to like my personal work. I do that for me. Now, when I am working for someone else and I am making photos for other people I will surely want my clients to like the work I have made for them. I am risking failure each and every time I go out to a session. It's that risk that makes us unique and sometimes makes magic. But you have to prepare yourself for failure and move on when you do or you won't improve.

Placerville Lifestyle Photography | El Dorado Hills Family Photography

2. Being creative isn't just for you- it's for other people. You have to give your creativity away.

This one hit me hard. I actually thought long and hard about this one before it made sense for my own life. I can totally relate to this. It is my true belief that the things we create should be passed down not for you but for them- our children. A strong sense of history in a family can do wonders. The things my mother has made for us aren't just special because they are beautiful, they are special because they were made with love and they were made for us. I have scrap books and I have pictures and that is why I have the love for photography. It means a lot to me to be able to give my children the same gift- the gift of my creativity. This gift can be for people in your family or just simply the people around you. That is why I love my job. I can give my creativity to others daily and they actually like it. They actually want it to be a part of their family for generations. It is just an amazing feeling.

Placerville Lifestyle Photographer | El Dorado Hills Children Photography

So after the talk, I was sitting at my desk thinking. I don't want my photography to be the only thing my kids will have handed down to them. Although its not a bad thing- it actually is just a personal thing. I want them to have multiple facets of my creativity and I want them to see how much their mother cared for them in many ways. For a while now I have been wanting to learn how to sew. I actually really want to learn very badly. I don't have a sewing machine and I have only done it a few times when I was little with my mom's machine. I honestly feel that I can attain this goal quite easily with some hard work. I really want to learn how to make a quilt and I want to learn how to hem my own kid's clothes (not to mention my own). It's a freeing thing being able to do things well and by yourself. I am a good cook and I can do other things that I am proud of but now I am ready for a new challenge. Anyone with me? Think of something you can do and hand that down to your children or to your neighbor. Make a cake and give it away. Make a handmade item and gift it away to a friend. It's an amazing feeling to be able to give such a creation and it's amazing to see the reaction too. The possibilities are endless. What kinds of things will you create?

Much love

Heather

Fun Family Times | Folsom Family-Children Photographer

"In the end,  it's not going to matter how many breath you took, but how many moments took your breath away.

--Shing Xiong

This last month has brought on a wide array or surprises and some disappointments and other life journey nonsense I would rather not discuss but in the end it all does't mean a darn thing. As long as I am happy, healthy and am able to physically watch my kids grow up right from under me, I am good. I am all good. This last month my kids started school. My daughter in 1st grade and my son in 4th grade it really makes you wonder how things get this way. How does time keep going on and on when I am not clearly ready of it?

5 on 5 Blog Circle September 2014 | Folsom Family-Children Photographer

With my son being at school, it meant that duckie would be lonely. I came home after school drop off and I found this. Yes, duckie would be less busy but at least he has a warm spot in the sun to rest for the majority of the day.

5 on 5 Blog Circle September 2014 | Folsom Family-Children Photographer

Later this last month we went to Apple Hill. For those of you that don't know- Apple Hill is an area around here that has lots of places to shop for fresh local fruits and veggies, plants, (MOSTLY APPLES) and get a few treats and crafts a long the way. Expect a lot of crazy out-of-towners to come up and not know how to drive on the windy roads we have here. Expect lots of crafters getting in the isles and making things hard to get around. Expect lots of yelling/screaming kids as you try and have a peaceful sit by the lake. Expect pure craziness when at Apple Hill. There are many farms to chose from but the best are always the busiest! This year we decided to go on "soft opening" weekend and there was virtually no one in sight. It was kinda creepy if you ask me!

IMG_8746-Edit

My kids never sit quietly, let alone quietly together and never talking nicely to each other. Who took my children?? This is not a normal scene. They were probably just watching for the ducks. What cute ducks they are too.

My Kids Were Here September 2014 | Placerville Family Photographer

Sometimes in life we just have to take many steps at the same time because life is moving forward so fast and we got left behind if we keep taking one step at a time.  --Unknown This month has been a whirl wind. The kids and I have been so busy and I am just sitting down now realizing how much we have actually done in the last month. It's these special moments that help us understand that the things left behind are bits of childhood lost. They are tidbits you will never get back and they must be remembered. Somehow at all costs I will try to document my kids lives as if they were here and as if they meant something. Remembering all the things that get left behind are just as important as the things that are being done in the present.

What I got out of this session was nothing short of amazing. I am so happy with these images and I hope they are as well. I know I would cherish these until the end of time! 5 on 5 Day in the Life August 2014 | Placerville Children Photographer

"Life is what happens when you are busy making other plans." John Lennon

Today was one of those days. I knew it was coming and I had fully prepared myself for it. I was ready. We were going to be busy. It was a day of errand running and doing some of the "not so fun things" about life but in the end it was worth it because the rest of the day was going to be what we had been waiting for! The anticipation was building and I couldn't wait for it...to be over. Let me take you through my day.

First we had to go shoe shopping. It was not something I remembered taking very long in the past. I was wrong. Well, the first store we chose to go to had some "not so quality" options. I had decided in my head that we were NOT going to buy shoes here...but after a bit of convincing my daughter won me over and we ended up buying her a pair of sandals that she just had to have.

After spending too much money at THAT store, we went to a REAL shoe store at our local outlet center. Both kids got a pair of new shoes here too. And no--I do not shop at Saks Fifth Avenue Outlet! Too expensive for my taste! We are a GAP kind of family. New school clothes here we come!

Basically I will just tell you that I was literally running from store to store because I was so afraid that we would be late to our next destination- the eye doctor. Both kids needed check ups on their eyes. Thank goodness all turned out well and no one needs glasses! Phew! But waiting there is always a complete bummer.

Fortunately, our visit there was short and sweet so we go to our next destination a little early. I got to relax a tad in the car. Not for long though as we had to change and meet one of our best friends to go to dance class.

I had to leave my daughter at dance on this day while she was in class. Not to worry- lots of friends and other dance mom's there to watch over her needs while she was awaiting her daddy. Now off to a Cub Scouts meeting. First one of the year! Can't wait to dive into all the new material and learn how to be a better person.

Next was dinner and a "mommy" Cub Scout committee meeting while having dinner at the local pizza joint. Just because we don't have change doesn't mean that we don't have fun at the game room! Back home by 8:45pm. Get ready for bed and for the love of Pete...let's go to sleep. I am bushed...

Thanks for stopping by! I can't wait to share the rest of the circle so head on over to Lori to see what she has to say!

Kinex and Legos: My Kids Were Here July 2014 | El Dorado Hills Family Photographer

"There are no shortcuts to any place worth going." Beverly Sills My son is fantastically interested in Legos. He is one of those kids that can spend hours at a time playing with them and creating with them. He will follow the directions that comes with the box but as soon as he is bored with that toy he will take on a new creation that is all his own. When he grows up he says he wants to be a "train driver" We tell him that is called a train engineer and to do that he needs to be really good at subjects in math in school. I have been told by people smarter than me that working with Legos and other such toys will give him a good foundation for his dream goal. Cool. I have no problem with that. When he turned 5 years old, someone gave him a box of Kinex connectors. Now, forgive me, but the box said it was made for ages 7 and up---so I put it away for a while. Now my son is 9. the box has been "down from storage" for a long time and I thought he would never get to putting it together! Well last week, he did just that and what a site. He did it all on his own and he incorporated some other "shady characters" into the build. I was so proud of him and can't wait until he takes this down just to make something else. If this love for building thing continues he may just choose to be an architect and build me my dream home! A girl can dream.

Summer can't wait...and neither will I | El Dorado Hills Family Photographer

"To the world you may be one person, but to one person you may be the world." Dr. Seuss

So I was lying on my bed today enjoying a wonderful silence. Don't ask me how I got it with two kids, two cats and a dog in the house with me, but none the less it was there. I almost took a nap it was that lovely. The silence always gets me thinking. Sometimes about good things and sometimes not but today it was more of an introspective kinda thing. Ya know, when you look at your life and decide what is important and what is not? I have been saying this for almost seven months and I will beat it to death if I have to: My family is the most important thing to me. I am trying so hard at this thing called "business" but in the end its not what is important. Don't get me wrong, my clients feel that they are important and I try really hard to make them see my priority is with them at all times. However, my time revolves around my family. That is the way I want it and that is the way it will always be. Period.

At the beginning of the year I attempted a 365 project. For those of you that don't know what that is, it is a project where you take one photo per day for an entire year. It doesn't sound that complicated but in reality it really is. Photographers usually do this when they are trying to break out of a rut, or force them to learn something new or just plain practice more often to get better at this thing we love so much: the world of photography. I got about four months into it when I realized something. Taking a photo a day- which annoyed my family to no end- was not conducive to my life. I couldn't do it. Realizing at 11pm at night that you forgot your photo of the day and getting up to "make something happen" was just not cool. Let me be totally honest when I say that I got lazy about it. I didn't get up most nights once realizing this because I new that what I came up with wouldn't be good at all. I told myself I would just take two photos the next day. That worked for a while until I realized that I just wasn't into it. I will regret it at the end of the year once I see all the lovely talented ladies in my 365 group pumping out lovely work- and they are doing it daily. So instead of beating myself up about quitting, I decided that I would just take photos of my life when I sparked an interest. Taking the pressure off myself to take a photo a day really helped me. Now I can take multiple per day when I want to and not feel the need to do that every day. Here are some of the ones I have captured so far on this road we call "summer life". Forgive me for my son doesn't happen to be in any of these. He must not like my camera very much. But at age nine, what boy does?

This summer is going by way to fast but I am enjoying every minute of it. We are making the most of it here in our house! Being that this is the first full summer I will have ever spent with my kids on a day to day basis, I think we are doing pretty good.
